If you’ve ever dived into spirituality, science, or even just stared at a computer screen, you’ve encountered the numbers 0 and 1. They are the foundation of our digital world—binary code, the language of computers, is entirely built on these two numbers. But what if I told you that these numbers also hold the key to understanding some of the deepest spiritual truths in yoga?
Let’s break it down.
0: The Infinite Space, The Unmanifest, The Shiva
Zero is nothingness. In Buddhist philosophy, it’s Shunyata—emptiness. In yoga, it’s the vast stillness of consciousness itself. It’s that deep meditation where thoughts dissolve, and all that remains is pure awareness.
Zero is potential, the unmanifest, the blank canvas before the artist starts to paint. It’s the stillness before the first movement, the deep silence before sound emerges.
In Hindu thought, this is Shiva, the ultimate observer, the consciousness that simply is. It is the space from which all things arise and to which all things return. Some call it the void, the Father, the cosmic witness, the field of infinite possibilities.
Think of the moments in your life when you’ve felt the most at peace—not because something amazing happened, but because you simply were. Maybe it was lying on the beach staring at the vast sky, or sitting in meditation where, for a fleeting second, everything felt perfectly enough.
That is 0. That is being.
1: The Energy, The Manifest, The Shakti
Now, let’s talk about 1. If 0 is stillness, 1 is movement. If 0 is Shiva, 1 is Shakti—the divine feminine energy that creates, dances, and expresses.
One is the first action, the first thought, the first sound. It’s when pure potential (0) turns into something real.
Think about the moment before you speak—silence. Then, a word emerges. That shift from silence to sound is the movement from 0 to 1.
In nature, 1 is the rivers flowing, the wind blowing, the fire burning, the body moving. It’s the manifest, the creation, the energy that turns nothing into something. It’s the Mother, the movement, the power of doing.
You know that feeling after a great yoga class, when you feel both still and alive at the same time? That’s the perfect dance of 0 and 1—stillness and energy coexisting.
The Dance of 0 and 1 in Life and Yoga
So, how does this relate to your life and your yoga practice?
Most of us spend our lives stuck in 1—always moving, thinking, doing, achieving. We live in action mode. We wake up, check emails, run to work, scroll social media, go to meetings, drive through traffic, work out, meet friends, repeat. It’s all Shakti, all energy, all movement.
But without 0, without moments of stillness, we burn out.
That’s why Shavasana (final relaxation) is so important in yoga. It’s the return to 0, the deep rest that allows all the movement before it to settle. It’s the balance.
The ancient yogis understood that 0 and 1 must exist together.
You need rest (0) and effort (1).
You need silence (0) and expression (1).
You need meditation (0) and movement (1).
You need the Father (0) and the Mother (1).
Life is the play of these two forces—the unmanifest and the manifest, the potential and the expression, the stillness and the movement.
Finding the Balance in Your Own Life
So, here’s my invitation to you:
Take moments to return to 0. Sit in silence. Meditate. Breathe. Let yourself just be.
Honor the power of 1. Move your body. Express your ideas. Take action on your dreams.
Recognize that neither is better or worse. You need both. Too much stillness, and nothing happens. Too much movement, and you burn out.
Just like in yoga, the magic happens in the balance—when you can move fluidly between 0 and 1, between being and doing.
Next time you step onto your yoga mat, notice how your practice is a conversation between 0 and 1. When you hold still in a pose, you touch 0. When you flow into the next movement, you step into 1.
And in that dance, you experience what yoga is all about—the union of stillness and energy, of Shiva and Shakti, of 0 and 1.
So, where in your life do you need more 0?
Where do you need more 1?
How can you find the dance between the two?
The answer is already within you—just take a deep breath, and you’ll feel it.
The AI Connection: Everything Comes Back to 0 and 1
There’s a lot of talk about AI these days—Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, automation, and how it’s transforming the world. AI is impressive; it can generate words, images, and even mimic human conversation. But if you look behind the curtain, beyond all the complex programming, AI operates on one simple truth—it’s all just 0s and 1s.
Think about that for a second.
Every sentence AI generates, every image it creates, every piece of data it processes—at its core, it’s all an intricate interpretation of 0 and 1.
0 represents stillness, absence, a pause.
1 represents action, presence, something happening.
It’s just billions of these two numbers, flickering in sequences so fast that they create the illusion of intelligence. AI doesn’t “think” like we do. It doesn’t have intuition, wisdom, or true understanding—it simply predicts patterns based on the arrangement of 0s and 1s.
Now, let’s zoom out.
Isn’t that the same with everything in life?
The universe itself moves between stillness and motion—expansion and contraction, light and dark, form and formlessness.
Our breath moves between 0 and 1—inhale (movement), exhale (release).
Consciousness exists between thought (1) and the quiet space between thoughts (0).
Even yoga, at its essence, is about balancing these two forces—the stillness of the mind (Shiva, 0) and the energy of movement (Shakti, 1).
So while AI may be built on 0s and 1s, so is everything else. The entire fabric of existence moves between these two states.
AI is simply our own creation—a mirror reflecting back what already exists in the universe. It’s a reminder that behind all the complexity, all the data, all the words and images—there’s a deeper, more profound truth:
Everything in this world, from the smallest binary code to the vastest galaxies, dances between 0 and 1. Stillness and movement. Potential and creation. Nothing and everything.
And the real intelligence? It’s in knowing when to be the 0 and when to be the 1.
