Yoga: More Than a Practice – It’s a State of Being

Someone recently asked me, “What is yoga?”

My answer: It’s both a process and a state.

The first time I truly understood what yoga is wasn’t during my teacher training, or while reading an ancient text—it was one random Tuesday in the middle of class.

I came in that day carrying the weight of the world. My mind was full of noise—emails, deadlines, problems to solve. Even as I stepped onto my mat, my head was somewhere else. The first few poses felt awkward. My breath was short. I kept wondering why I even showed up.

But somewhere around the halfway point, something shifted. My breath began to match the movement. My thoughts slowed. My shoulders softened. And by the time I was in Savasana, it was as if the noise had dissolved. I felt light. Peaceful. Completely present.

That’s when it clicked—yoga is both a process and a state.

The process is what we do: the poses, the breathwork, the meditation, the chanting, or even an act of selfless service. The state is what we become: present, still, connected, joyful—what the yogis call Ananda, bliss.

The process is the doorway. The state is what waits for you on the other side. You can’t force it, but if you keep showing up, the state will come. It always does.

So whatever your practice looks like today, remember:

  • Show up for the process.

  • Let go of expectations.

  • Allow the state to arrive in its own time.

Because the real yoga? It isn’t just in the doing—it’s in the becoming.

And now I’ll ask you:When was the last time you practiced something—not for the result, but for the feeling it brought you? What did it open up for you?.
