What Does “Advanced” in Yoga Really Mean?

“The pose begins when you want to leave it.”

I used to think advanced yoga meant doing more difficult poses.

Deeper backbends.Stronger balances.Holding postures longer than everyone else in the room.

When I first started practicing, like many students, I was fascinated by the physical side of yoga. I wanted to improve, push harder, master the sequence. Progress meant sweating more, stretching further, achieving something visible.

And honestly… that stage was necessary.

The body is often how yoga first speaks to us.

But over the years — and now decades — my understanding of what advanced means has completely changed.


🧘 Stage One — The Physical Practice

In the beginning, yoga lived mostly in my muscles and joints.

I remember measuring my practice by:

  • how flexible I felt,

  • how strong I became,

  • whether I could hold the posture without falling.

The poses were goals.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. The physical practice builds discipline. It teaches effort. It wakes up the body.

But eventually I noticed something interesting…

Even when my body improved, my mind was still restless.

I could hold the pose — but could I hold my attention?

That’s when yoga started shifting.


🧠 Stage Two — The Mental Practice

At some point, the challenge stopped being physical.

It became mental.

Standing in a posture, feeling discomfort, watching the mind negotiate:

“Come out early.”“This is too hard.”“You did better yesterday.”

Yoga became a mirror.

I began realizing the real practice wasn’t controlling the body — it was observing the mind.

Advanced no longer meant doing more.

It meant staying present when I wanted to escape.

Breathing when resistance appeared.

Learning patience with myself.


❤️ Stage Three — The Emotional Practice

Then yoga went deeper.

There were days when I walked into class carrying stress, expectations, or emotions I didn’t fully understand.

And somehow, during practice, things surfaced.

Frustration.Relief.Sometimes unexpected emotion in stillness.

Over time I realized yoga wasn’t just stretching muscles — it was releasing what we hold inside.

Advanced practice here meant allowing.

Not fixing.Not suppressing.Just witnessing.

I learned that strength wasn’t pushing through emotion — it was being honest with it.


🌿 Stage Four — Awareness (The Spiritual Practice)

After years of practice and teaching, something subtle began to change.

The poses didn’t matter as much anymore.

I was still doing the same sequence… but the experience was different.

Less comparison.Less proving.More listening.

Yoga became awareness.

I started noticing:

  • how I reacted when things didn’t go my way,

  • how breath changed my state,

  • how presence felt more important than performance.


Advanced yoga became quieter.

It wasn’t about achieving the posture — it was about being fully inside it.

And slowly I realized:

The real practice was never confined to the mat.

It showed up in conversations.In patience.In how I handled challenges in life and business.In how I treated myself on difficult days.

For me today, advanced yoga means:

You can be strong and soft at the same time.You can fall without frustration.You can stay calm when life becomes intense.

It means awareness travels with you — off the mat and into life.

Because after decades of practice, I’ve learned something simple:

Yoga doesn’t make life perfect.

It makes you present enough to live it fully.

So maybe advanced yoga isn’t about doing harder poses.

Maybe it’s about becoming more aware…more compassionate…more connected.

Maybe advanced yoga is simply this:

👉 showing up, breathing, and paying attention — again and again.

And that journey never really ends.
