What’ is Sumit’s Yoga ?
Sumit Banerjee created a sequence in 2004, which combined the poses from Bikram Yoga and Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. The class is for ALL Levels.
He also added the element of music which synchronized with the four unique flows that he put in a particular order. Initially Sumit named his class Yoga Fusion as what he was wanting to achieve is the best of both worlds ( Bikram + Flow). As his class was unique and he didn’t want to confuse his students he ended up calling this class Sumit’s Yoga.
Since 2004, Sumit has trained thousands of teachers and students who fell in love with this blend.
“I wanted to create something for all in mind, something fun so i added music , yet staying true to the discipline and healing aspect of the Yoga practice”. Sumit

What to expect in a Sumits Yoga class
Now that you understand the benefits of Sumits Yoga, let's dive into what you can expect in a typical Sumits Yoga class. Each class is designed to provide a well-rounded experience that targets both the physical and mental aspects of your well-being. Here's what you can expect:
1. Warm-up: Every Sumits Yoga class begins with a warm-up sequence to prepare your body for the practice ahead. This usually involves gentle stretches and movements to awaken your muscles and increase circulation.
2. Dynamic Flow: After the warm-up, you will move into a dynamic flow sequence that combines fluid movements with breath control. This part of the class helps to build heat in the body and increase flexibility.
3. Standing Poses: The next portion of the class focuses on standing poses, which help to build strength, improve balance, and increase stability. These poses challenge both your physical and mental strength, allowing you to cultivate resilience and focus.
4. Balancing Poses: Balancing poses are an integral part of Sumits Yoga as they require concentration, core strength, and stability. These poses not only enhance your physical balance but also help to cultivate mental balance and clarity.
5. Floor Poses: The class then transitions to floor poses, where you will explore different stretches and gentle twists to release tension and improve flexibility. This part of the class allows for deep relaxation and rejuvenation.
6. Final Relaxation: Each Sumits Yoga class ends with a final relaxation pose called Savasana, where you lie on your back and allow your body and mind to fully integrate the benefits of the practice. This is a time for deep relaxation and reflection.
Essentials for Sumits Yoga
To fully enjoy your Sumits Yoga practice, it's important to have the essential equipment. Here's what you'll need:
1. Yoga Mat: A good quality yoga mat provides stability and grip, ensuring that you can move safely through your practice. Look for a mat that is thick enough to provide cushioning, yet firm enough to support your poses.
2. Comfortable Clothing: Opt for clothing that allows for free movement and doesn't restrict your range of motion. Choose breathable materials that wick away sweat and keep you comfortable throughout your practice.
3. Yoga Props: While not always necessary, yoga props such as blocks, straps, and bolsters can enhance your practice by providing support and allowing for deeper stretches. These props can be especially helpful for beginners or those with specific physical limitations.
4. Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is essential during any physical activity, including Sumits Yoga. Make sure to bring a water bottle to your class and take sips whenever you need to replenish fluids.
Tips for beginners starting Sumits Yoga
Starting a new yoga practice can be both exciting and intimidating, especially if you're a beginner. Here are some tips to help you navigate your Sumits Yoga journey:
1. Start Slow: It's important to listen to your body and start slow. Don't push yourself too hard in the beginning. Allow yourself to gradually build strength and flexibility over time.
2. Focus on Breath: Pay attention to your breath throughout the practice. Deep, steady breathing not only helps to increase oxygen flow to your muscles but also calms your mind and keeps you present.
3. Modify as Needed: Don't be afraid to modify poses to suit your needs. If a pose feels too challenging, use props or make adjustments to make it more accessible. Remember, yoga is a personal journey, and everyone's body is different.
4. Ask for Assistance: If you're unsure about a pose or need help with alignment, don't hesitate to ask your instructor for assistance. They are there to guide and support you on your yoga journey.
5. Be Patient: Yoga is a lifelong practice, and results take time. Be patient with yourself and trust the process. Celebrate the small victories along the way and enjoy the journey of self-discovery.
Modifications and variations in Sumits Yoga poses
Sumits Yoga offers a variety of modifications and variations to cater to practitioners of all levels. Here are some common modifications you may encounter:
1. Chair Pose Variation: If the traditional Chair Pose is challenging, you can modify by placing your hands on your hips or using a chair for support. This modification allows you to focus on building strength in your legs without straining your knees.
2. Downward Facing Dog Variation: If you find Downward Facing Dog difficult, you can modify by bending your knees slightly or using blocks under your hands. This modification helps to alleviate pressure on the wrists and shoulders.
3. Bridge Pose Variation: If Bridge Pose feels too intense, you can modify by placing a block under your sacrum for support. This variation allows you to gently open the chest and stretch the hip flexors without straining your lower back.
4. Warrior Pose Variation: If Warrior Pose is challenging, you can modify by widening your stance or slightly bending your front knee. This modification helps to improve balance and stability while reducing strain on the hips and knees.
Remember, modifications are not a sign of weakness but rather a way to honor and respect your body's limitations. Listen to your body, make adjustments as needed, and always prioritize safety and comfort during your Sumits Yoga practice.
The importance of proper breathing in Sumits Yoga
Breath control, also known as Pranayama, is an integral part of Sumits Yoga. Proper breathing techniques help to synchronize your movements with your breath, allowing for a deeper mind-body connection. Here's why proper breathing is essential in Sumits Yoga:
1. Enhanced Focus: Deep, conscious breathing helps to calm the mind and bring your attention to the present moment. By focusing on your breath, you can let go of distractions and fully immerse yourself in the practice.
2. Improved Oxygen Flow: Proper breathing increases oxygen flow to your muscles, providing them with the necessary energy to perform the poses. This helps to prevent muscle fatigue and enhances your overall physical performance.
3. Stress Reduction: Deep breathing triggers the relaxation response in your body, reducing stress levels and promoting a sense of calm. By consciously controlling your breath, you can activate your body's natural relaxation system.
4. Improved Lung Capacity: Regular practice of deep breathing exercises in Sumits Yoga helps to expand your lung capacity over time. This allows you to take in more oxygen and release more carbon dioxide, promoting better overall respiratory health.
