Furthermore, 59.3 percent of the yoga group reported a 50 percent or greater decrease in symptoms, compared to just 6.3 percent of the waitlist group. Additionally, 44 percent of the yoga group achieved low IDS-CR scores, signifying that their depression was in remission, compared to 6.3 percent in the waitlist group.
The study participants had a positive perception of the heated yoga sessions, and no serious adverse effects were associated with the intervention. Lead author Maren Nyer, the director of Yoga Studies at the Depression Clinical and Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, suggested that yoga and heat-based interventions could offer a non-medication-based approach to treating depression with added physical benefits.
The researchers are planning additional studies to examine the specific contributions of heat and yoga to the observed clinical effects in depression.
